## Blog entry by Kathy Skramstad

# **PSD, Photoshop Scripting, or LayerScript?**

Over the last decade, Photoshop has implemented "layers," which are used to compose a single image and then edit it. This type of editing enables Photoshop to function as a digital scrapbook, so the images can be updated later, in a convenient and easy manner. In the beginning, layers were inserted into Photoshop by using the P (for Place) tool with a path or a grid. We named these layers or Layers and then marked them so that you knew you needed to make an adjustment and then enter the Layers palette and select the layer you needed to edit.

You can also make adjustments with a different type of layer, called a Smart Filter. A Smart Filter does its job without actually adding or changing pixels. When you select a Smart Filter and begin the edit, the filter will ask you how much to change the image. When you're done, you can delete the filter and the resulting effect is the same as what you would see using layers. For example, if you create a vignette effect with the Vignette command and then go to Adjust > Blur > Smart Blur, the same type of adjustment is made with the same amount of blur, only this time the blurring is achieved without changing pixel values. It's a little bit of magic.

Another layer-based feature is the ability to insert and edit mask(s) using the Mask Selection tool. (See Figure 13-16). You can mask out areas of a layer, make selections from the original image (which is why you need the original image size), or use both.

A Smart Filter is a very powerful tool as you can apply effects to

Photoshop is Adobe's big name brand of image editing software. Its popularity stems from its affordability and intuitive interfaces, which non-photographers can find easier to use than professional programs such as Adobe Illustrator.

Photoshop was invented by Thomas Knoll in May 1991, to allow users to create and edit images. Its predecessor was Adobe PhotoDraw. It was developed with digital photography in mind, and was released around the same time Adobe released Photoshop version 1 in August 1992.

Priced at \$399, it was the beginning of a package that would later encompass the more mainstream versions Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements. In the years to follow, Photoshop would become one of the most popular programs in the world.

Photoshop has been developed and improved over the years, to meet growing demands from professional and amateur image editors. Photoshop versions CS and CS2, released in 2001 and 2002 respectively, allowed for the creation of complex graphics and included advanced new features such as layers, channels, masking and paths.

Photoshop CS3, released in May of 2003, further upgraded the software's user interface, adding shape layers and new tools that made it easier to quickly create complex images.

Photoshop CS4, released in March of 2005, was the first version of Photoshop to be released under the Creative Cloud banner. It included many useful new features, including the ability to work in 32bit colour depth and use screen-space shadows.

Photoshop CS5, released in September of 2008, featured a new editing workspace that allowed for more accurate editing in the selection tool.

Photoshop CS6, released in April of 2014, added new features such as Content-Aware Fill, Content-Aware Move and Content-Aware Paint.

The latest version of Photoshop is Adobe Photoshop CC, released in November of 2017. This version of Photoshop was built from the ground up by the Photoshop development team, and is meant for the professional image editor.

It includes new features such as the Behance integration, Live Photo support and advanced new features for visual effects.

While Photoshop remains at the forefront of the industry, that is, not all serious photographers use it. Many prefer to use cheaper, simpler programs, such as Corel Draw or GIMP.

Photoshop contains many features but, as with many expensive software programs, some users may find its complexity and lack of beginner-friendly tools overwhelming.

VECTOR LAYERS
Unsorted layers are a bit confusing because they don’t have any defined order.
This is because you can create multiple layers and you can move them around on the canvas.
When you move a layer, the layer becomes a child of the layer it was originally on, and vice-versa.
If you create a new layer and move it to the top of the layer, the new layer becomes the top of the pile.
If you move a layer up a level, the layer becomes a child layer. If you move it into the bottom layer, the layer becomes a parent layer.

LAYERS
Layers are similar to unsorted layers in that they don’t have an order. However, layers have a specific order and are automatically sorted into their respective group, and can be easily rearranged.
To create a new layer, use the Layer menu on the Layers palette. The layers that you create are automatically added to the bottom of the stack.
To move or duplicate a layer, drag it to the stack of a different layer. This could be a new layer or an existing layer.

You can also create a new layer by pressing the New Layer button in the layers palette. This will insert a new layer at the bottom of the stack.

DOLLAR LAYER
The Dollar Layer is a new feature that allows you to quickly turn off the visibility of other layers. This is useful in situations when you don’t want a certain layer in your image. You can set up a layer for your image and then turn off the visibility for all the other layers.
There are three ways to use the Dollar Layer.

Hide Layer
To hide a layer click on the Hide Layer button on the Layers palette menu.

Visible Layer
When you hide a layer it becomes invisible, but will still retain the position of that layer. If you then make a copy of that layer it will become visible, and that is exactly what you want for working in the image.
To make the layer visible again simply click on the Hide Layer button.

Saved Filter
There is no way to save the visibility of a layer using a filter. However, you can use the Dollar Layer to save a layer for later use.
There are two ways to use the saved filter.

1.To hide a layer click on the Hide Layer button on the Layers palette menu.

Q:

How to get the count of files within folder

So I am trying to write a function to count all of the files in a folder by running through them and summing their length. I have figured out most of the function, but I am getting a syntax error with the line:

Can anyone help with the syntax of this?
Thank you
